HEALTH BENEFIT OF WATERMELON
HEALTH BENEFIT OF WATERMELON
Watermelon is a member of the native Cucurbitaceae family in
tropical Africa near the Kalahari Desert. Botanists call it "Pepo",
which is a fruit with a thick crust and a meat center. [8] It is mainly
consumed as a refreshing summer fruit, highly appreciated by consumers for its
cooling capacity, attractive color, delicious taste and high water content to
quench the thirst of wine. . [5] According to Oberio and Sogi, 9 watermelons
produce 55.3% juice, 31.5% bark and 10.4% pomace. Carotenoids such as lycopene
and β-carotene are responsible for the red and orange watermelon colors,
respectively. The sweetness of watermelon is mainly due to a combination of
sucrose, glucose and fructose. Sucrose and glucose represent 20-40% and
fructose accounts for 30-50% of total sugars in a ripe watermelon.
With the rapid growth of cardiovascular disease,
health-conscious consumers are increasingly interested in foods that offer
health benefits beyond the provision of essential nutrients. Watermelon
contains phytochemicals such as lycopene, vitamin C, β-carotene and total
polyphenolic content with anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and antioxidant
properties. Dietary intake of these products with antioxidant properties is
important to maintain human health and well-being. It reduces the presence of
chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer and certain coronary
diseases, preventing the formation of free and reactive oxygen species. The
presence of these phytochemicals improves their potential use as functional
ingredients in food application. This paper aims to identify phytochemicals
found in watermelon, and highlights the role of natural antioxidants in
reducing the risk of chronic diseases to facilitate the use of synthetic
antioxidants. Furthermore, another approach is to seek recognition of
watermelon as a possible snack and support its traditional consumption.
Watermelon is susceptible to frost damage, requiring a long
growing season with relatively high temperatures. Daytime temperatures between
70 and 80 degrees F and nighttime temperatures between 65 and 70 degrees F are
ideal. Plastic drownings raise ground temperatures and help the onions ripen a
few weeks earlier than normal. Individual melons tend to be larger and sweeter.
Choose a site that has full sun, no shade or minimal shade.
Melon, any melon, be it watermelon, melon, sweet melon, you
need a long period of heat to concentrate your sugar. This means sunny days to
produce lush grapes that produce carbohydrate-sweetening melons that delight
the buds. But they don't need endless summer days. There are many melons that
can be grown in dry summer areas from Montana to Maine and Canada using
varieties that are ripe for 75-85 days or less.
